I’m in Georgia today, red-eye flight in from SFO, crammed like the unfortunate middle sardine in an all too crowded tin. For those who aren’t aware, economy class on a Boeing 747 jet-airplane isn’t considered comfortable. If you are tired enough, and if the woman behind you would stop tapping her three pound fake finger nails on the touchscreen embedded on the back of your head rest, you might get about half an hour of uneasy “sleep”. I was not so fortunate, so for now, thank god for making coffee. Thank god for making coffee cups. Thank god for creating redbull, and putting it in a can that fits perfectly in my hand. Hello Atlanta Georgia.

I’m off to the races

AMA Road Race @ Road Atlanta.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-42354835197056540452012-04-10T22:27:00.001-07:002012-04-10T22:28:28.216-07:00Oooh eeh aaahIt's a quick one tonight. Don't worry, I'll actually post up something of substance soon. I've been writing a decent amount, painting too!

Here is the painting of little sister as it rests for the night

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-35283874771974879042012-03-27T20:28:00.002-07:002012-03-27T20:33:32.389-07:00Resetting sleep scheduleI've finally started my good habit plan - I wake up at 5:30 every morning, work out and climb, then go to school, then do whatever needs to be done at home. After a nice fulfilling day of doing and making stuff, I go to sleep at a reasonable hour!

Because of this I am butt-ass tired at 8:30pm.

This is a good thing though! It means I will become super beef-cake and of sound mind...and that will...mean a steadier brushstroke and a deeper painting? Ah well, we will find out.

Here is today's progress on little sister.

I read a little blurb for my MSV2 homework, an article on "The Cut Up Method" by William S. Burroughs that I found rather interesting. It kind of related to my own idle thoughts on all painting and art being our world as it was taken in and filtered through our minds. Nothing comes from nothing, but art comes from filtered and skewed something...? I think. Haha. It's time for bed (as usual), got to be early to rise!

CheersMatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-78649589311222602342012-03-26T21:41:00.004-07:002012-03-26T21:48:33.383-07:00This stageWell, Daytona was definitely an experience... A lot of sun, a lot of stretched Busas' and a lot of really really loud choppers. Sadly nothing as of yet to show for all of that work short of a few lap edits. I will hold off from posting any GoPro youtube links for now, in favor of waiting for that final edit.

I've just now begun getting into the groove of painting again, this being my most recent starter -

If you look back a few posts you will recognize perhaps my little sister in the blob of green red and black.

I always do like this rough stage of the painting, where everything begins to really form, and before I've over-worked everything and have to scrape off and re-learn. But then again there isn't the depth I like for a finished painting, and something compels me to keep adding layer upon layer. I mean that's the beauty of creating isn't it? That you are learning and can always build up again, sometimes better than before. I even got on a buzzed rant about that to a class-mate a few nights ago.

Anyway, I'm still recovering from too many nights ended with drinks and bad food, time to go paint more and eat fruit and veggies!Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-25318078132992533352012-03-11T23:44:00.003-07:002012-03-11T23:54:11.530-07:00Exciting stuffSo tomorrow is going to be a busy busy day. I wake up, bright and early on a wonderful Monday morning, and I go take a test. Maybe not just "A" test, but rather my Final exam for MSV1. I honestly don't think it will be that difficult, and even then, I've studied this whole weekend away making sure I know the course material. That's not the exciting bit, its just the teaser.

Tomorrow, after I finish my Exam and flit on home, I will meet up with Joe and Tomas, pack up the Beemer, and away we go to Half Moon Bay. Away we travel to GoPro HQ to prepare for Daytona Florida.

Seems all well and good, but why all the hullabaloo? What does that have to do with "Making things". Well I am happy to say that the team is heading off to Florida to shoot video of the AMA road race opener for the season, during bike week in Daytona freaking Florida.

All that I've done in MSV1 so far has had to do with pre-production and production of movies and short films. I am now hired to travel to do JUST THAT. I will be sure to post links of all we have done once it is complete. Hopefully that will be a just a few short weeks after the event. If I can figure out how to post from my phone I will try and do that as well, hopefully with pictures. I will be sketching the whole time.

Time for some adventure. :).

Oh, and just for fun, I have a few toons I started to draw (not close to finished). Can you tell who they are going to be?

Also this guy.

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-13880310806085806112012-03-08T00:20:00.002-08:002012-03-08T00:27:06.757-08:00CartoonsNothing much to really report on in regards to stuff that I've made lately. Life has been a little hectic trying to set up to go shoot video for GoPro next week, mix that with Finals week. I did manage to get a few cartoons drawn out however.

I always love going back and drawing cartoons, playing heavily with line. Inevitably I draw motorcycles, albeit with a little bit of artistic freedom. I think eventually I'll make one of these into an oil painting cartoon. A good break from more realistic and openly expressive works.

The original -

And the revised -

Some small notes about the toons' that have been drawn, I really like the rider curling the whole wrist around the grip, and having everything a little more curved in body position.

Past the cartoons, I do have a couple of canvases I have just recently gesso'd. Means I'll have to get crackin' on the painting of little sister.

Cheers, g'night.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-86553918229029747762012-03-01T00:35:00.003-08:002012-03-01T00:39:24.096-08:00Starting a new paintingSince I think I forgot to post it up here, this is the finished Ian/Shirelle Oil on Canvas -

I'm totally brain dead, I was writing a research paper all day today, so I'm gonna keep this short rather than drift into incoherent rambling. I've decided I didn't have enough green in the last painting, so I'm gonna have green in my next. It's also going to be of my little sister.
I have done a few sketches. The first one her face is too long, and I should shade some stuff darker...BUT I'M NOT GONNA. The second one ended up being more me toying with contrasting blacks and whites in her hair.

G'nightMatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-51991065309635352572012-02-25T00:55:00.003-08:002012-02-25T01:01:54.571-08:00Might as well have been finger paintingI caked on paint, and over those thick strokes I caked on more. Once the whole space was covered I was more or less just shuffling mountains of paint around, and I bet I would have been just as effective had I been using my fingers.

Strike that, I would have been better with my fingers. If only I had an unlimited supply of wet wipes.

Anyway, it feels done, right now at 1am in the morning, without having seen it under the harsh judge of sunlight. I'll find out for proper how finished it is tomorrow of course.

I will say that this was a bit of a break for me. Usually I give myself something to follow, a shape or image or form, then build from that basic. In this instance I just laid the paint down, stepped back and fiddled with it, no bigger thought in mind. I was just letting it form as I went. It's something I will have to practice more, get a feel for what I like, and what I don't. Develop is the word I think. Develop that method.

Here it is, as it stands now, in crappy lighting.
Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-17302143019708257422012-02-22T00:47:00.002-08:002012-02-22T00:54:33.229-08:00Ah wellIt is late again, and I can't say that it was all that productive of a late night. Perhaps I could have called it a productive night had I ended it two hours earlier...before I started obsessively reading a web-comic. Such is such and I've rid myself of it. Yay me...yay storylines that get boring after...well nevermind

Before I got onto that little misadventure I painted, and brought some color into Ian and Cherel.

Here is before...somewhat colder, sadder and boring

And now after! I think it warms them up a little.

Of course it's far from finished, but at very least I feel I have more to play off. It was uncomfortable at first, just filling in that unused canvas. The feeling it gave off was similar to the one I get when I haven't started a project yet. Fiddling is easy, starting something from scratch...now that is hard. I swear I had something more better smarter to say, but as it usually goes for this time of night, that more better smarter stuff fell out of my head. SoooOooOOOo...G'night.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-34726089188646122332012-02-20T00:51:00.000-08:002012-02-20T00:58:40.561-08:00A few fun pictures. It has been an awful tiring day today. I think it was the fumes. Ooooooh those lovely two stroke and race gas smells...Loopy and tired for days.

So I went to the Infineon Kart track today, they had a split supermoto/karts day hosted. My friends Mark, Sarah, Jason and Jen were all there, and it was a blast to get to see them all. No riding for me today, although I've become rather set on gearing up and tearing around next time. Next time.

No, instead I took pictures, lots and lots of pictures. Of those lots and lots, I've whittled down to these. That's it for now, time for bed, then school.

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-18885221019230592432012-02-18T01:12:00.000-08:002012-02-18T01:18:21.403-08:00Another nightAnother bit of work on this double portrait painting. I didn't really have a time when I thought it would have crossed into the realm of "too late". It is the weekend after all! But its past 1am now, my ears have begun to hurt with the pressure of the headphones, and you know what? I'm actually kind of tired. I put a lot of work into Ian's face today, and spent a good long time fiddling with the shape of his nose. That is what I love about oils, I can come in the next day and just keep pushing paint back and forth. I'll work with Cherel (spelling...?) next, although her face, being much softer in shape than Ian's will take just as much fiddling as Ian's nose.

I spent too much time jumping from subject to subject today, having a midterm and all, but now it's finished and like I said before, its the weekend! I think I'll make something tomorrow past just working on this painting. Maybe make Krog run about a bit more, or something of that sort.

Cheers.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-76763359630179156572012-02-16T00:58:00.000-08:002012-02-16T02:43:58.085-08:00Coffee, beer and a mixer.Nothing new tonight, not yet anyway. I'm going to not sleep for a while, side effect of drinking a bit o' coffee far too late at night. The idea of course, was to stay up and wiley during the AIGA mixer, the result...more or less wiley, more rambley. Is what it is, between coffee and beer I've been gassy and obtuse. It was fun to meet other graphic people however, learn a bit about different programs, and I'll be sure to make it to whatever events I can. Tomorrow will be a study day before heading over to SF again for another AIGA event, then a cut&paste comp that my peer mentor Jarrod Allen is competing in. Should be fun. I'll post up and update on Ian's painting tomorrow before all of that.

*edit* Ok here s my almost 3am update of my current painting of Ian and his lady. It's a long long way off, and I'm gonna have to figure out what colors really work...and I'm gonna have to cover a lot of yellow now...haha.

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903784504000861483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4042370862432425945.post-75013318361971036362012-02-14T23:39:00.000-08:002012-02-16T01:03:52.782-08:00Meet KrogToday I made Krog. I really don't know what Krog is, but...well, Krog is just Krog. He wasn't anything more than a quick doodle, drawn because I thought my friend Erica I. would enjoy it. She is the one who named him Krog as well. Once he was named he was more than a doodle! He had become Krog.

2D Krog soon became 3D Krog, and I figured I'd give stop animation a try. I've decided to paint my friend Ian S. and his girlfriend. For now it's just figuring out proportions, and to be honest, its kind of a pain trying to balance two faces at once.
